Our History
Founded in 2001 in partnership with the United Way of Rhode Island’s Community Schools RI (CSRI) initiative and Newport Public Schools, the Newport Community School (NCS) has had a thriving presence in both Thompson Middle School (TMS) and Rogers High School (RHS), providing out-of-school time programs to the community’s secondary grade level students and their families.
In the summer of 2009, NCS expanded to offer NCS Connects. This program addresses barriers to learning by improving access to wellness, mental health, and family support services. These services encourage family involvement and link home, school, and community as essential to success.
In January of 2010, the Aquidneck Island Adult Learning Center (AIALC) merged to become a division of NCS, continuing to provide, at more than ten sites, comprehensive services including academic assessment, literacy and numeracy instruction, workplace literacy, job readiness skills, high school completion, vocational training, and counseling services. All AIALC programs have an underlying focus: the active recruitment of early school leavers and special populations; assisting adult learners to become literate members of the community; assisting adult learners to become economically self-sufficient; and providing various services that offer opportunities to complete a secondary credential.
With the addition of NCS Connects and AIALC, Newport Community School is a comprehensive provider of academic and social support for youth to adult learners in Newport County and is considered one of Rhode Island’s premiere school reform strategy models, making positive and meaningful change in our local community. The organization has a track record of success, demonstrated by annual program evaluations and external reviews by independent parties. It is a flourishing organization with a loyal following among both youth and adults and is well respected by its community partners.
Our Success
Since the organization’s inception in 2001, NCS has grown in size and scope of services, making meaningful contributions to supporting student achievement, illustrated in a 2010 report prepared by the Rhode Island Department of Education, The Rhode Island 21st CCLC Initiative – Supporting Student Success for Nearly a Decade. NCS’ work in improving academic outcomes was highlighted notably in the following:
46.3% of middle/high school students regularly attending NCS programs showed improvement in English
27% of middle school students improved from not proficient to proficient of better in mathematics
52% of middle school students improved their reading grades
According to teachers, 100% of middle/high school students regularly attending improved classroom motivation
NCS’s partnership with Rogers High School contributed to an increase of 10% in the graduation rate
In October 2011, NCS was honored during the Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance (RIASPA) Breakfast of Champions, receiving RIASPA’s Lights On Afterschool Exemplary Program award. NCS was chosen for its continued excellence in providing high-quality afterschool programming for the children and youth of Newport, as well as NCS’ continued commitment to excellence through evaluation, professional development, and program growth.
More recently, NCS’ highly effective partnership and linkages to its host schools, TMS and RHS, received national attention when the United States Department of Education (US DOE) selected NCS as one of fifteen programs in the county to be studied specifically around Increased Learning Time (ILT), developed strategies used to increase learning time and the total number of hours dedicated to engagement in core academic subjects, enrichment activities, in collaboration with host schools through joint planning and professional development.
